SNES PORTS DANGEROUS DAVE + SUPAPLEX by ludufre

Dangerous Dave

John Romero's 1990 DOS platformer, rebuilt for the Super Nintendo straight from the original executable. Ten levels, warp zones, the jetpack, the gun — and that trophy.

Score 00000 Level

Psst: the gems on this side of the page can be collected.

Captured from the ROM — title screen and level 1.

Translated, not remade

Dangerous Dave never had its source code released, so the port starts from DAVE.EXE itself. The game was disassembled and translated into C one function at a time, running on top of an exact copy of the original data segment. Physics, timings, monster paths — even the quirks — behave like the DOS version, because they are the DOS version.

VGA on a 16-bit console

The levels are drawn in Mode 3, with 256 colors — the closest the SNES gets to VGA. Everything that moves is a hardware sprite. Dave alone uses up to 42 colors in a single frame, so each frame is split into as many as three overlapping sprite layers, each with its own exact palette.

PC speaker → SPC700

The beeps of the PC speaker are emulated on the SNES sound chip, and the game logic ticks at the VGA's 70 Hz on top of the console's 60 Hz — so it runs at exactly the original speed.

What changed from DOS

  • The SNES screen is 256 px wide, against 320 on VGA. Pixels stay 1:1: the camera shows 16 of the 20 tiles and follows Dave, keeping the original 15-column scroll.
  • The top HUD was rearranged into two lines (SCORE … LEVEL / DAVES … GUN), using the SNES border.
  • VGA colors have 6 bits per channel, the SNES 5: a few close background tones were merged (176 → 128). Sprites keep exact palettes.
  • Keyboard prompts became joypad prompts, and the high-score name is typed with the D-pad.

Supaplex

The 1991 cult puzzler by Digital Integration, ported to the Super Nintendo on an SA-1 cartridge. All 111 levels, players, saves, the Hall of Fame and the demos.

A second CPU in the cartridge

The port is built on OpenSupaplex, Sergio Padrino's 1:1 reimplementation of the game in C — far more than the console's 3.58 MHz 65816 can push. So it rides on an SA-1: the 10.74 MHz coprocessor in the cartridge runs the whole game, while the SNES CPU only feeds the picture chip, the DMA queue and the sound.

A PC screen made of tiles

The game believes it is drawing on a 320×200 PC screen. On the SNES that screen — and the whole 944×368 level — live in the cartridge's battery-backed RAM, read through the SA-1's virtual bitmap window. Only the tiles that change are converted and streamed to video RAM; the level scrolls in hardware and the panel sits on its own layer.

Mouse menus, joypad hands

The original menus are clicked with a mouse. Here the D-pad drives the cursor (it speeds up while held), A clicks, B cancels, and player names are typed on an on-screen keyboard. Saves, players, the Hall of Fame and recorded demos go to 8 KB of battery-backed storage.

Checked against the PC

The original demos are replayed on the SNES and compared with the PC version, step by step. The cartridge has also been run on a real Super Nintendo with an sd2snes.
